At NOA Adventures we believe traveling responsibly means you are respecting and honoring local cultures, while being mindful of your environmental impact, and fostering deep relationships and understanding with communities you visit. Because we hold these values, we have developed lasting partnerships with local businesses and experts in environmental conservation in every country we have traveled to over the last decade of leading outdoor programs around the world.
Our commitment to responsible eco travel includes a variety of different efforts while abroad. Firstly, we always stay in local sustainable ecovillages, which provide our participants with a better understanding of what it means to truly live sustainably day to day. One of these practices includes purchasing and taking turns cooking locally grown, in-season produce instead of eating out. We also teach our participants about permaculture, and allow them to witness first-hand why the source of our food matters. During our travels, we also promote a zero-waste mentality, steering clear of overconsumption and eliminating single-use plastics.
The work we do while abroad aligns strongly with our commitment to sustainability and nature conservation. We work with local nonprofits, universities, and other conservation focused organizations to collect critical data needed to identify at-risk animal habitats and species, and volunteer at plant and animal refuge centers. For instance, in Ecuador we partner with an organization called Yanacocha Animal Rescue Center, which works to protect and conserve various plant and animal species that are targets and victims of illegal trafficking in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Our programs stray away from going to what are known as commercial tourist traps, and purchasing souvenirs; instead we seek out authentic experiences off the beaten path where we can immerse ourselves in nature and truly give back to the environment and community we are visiting. A couple featured eco-excursions include beach clean-ups in every program we offer, planting endangered trees in the Galapagos, and making your very own chocolate from organic cacao in Costa Rica.
Aside from our efforts to leave no trace on the environments we visit, we also prepare all participants with an adequate understanding of the cultural norms/ local standards when it comes to things like dress code in the country we are traveling to. Prior to travel we speak with our participants about use of respectful language and practices as well as the importance of acknowledging where our help is needed, and where it is not. We are very intentional about avoiding imposing our own beliefs and cultures onto the local communities we visit, and instead practice active listening and learning from local communities. We guarantee that any work we are doing is work that local communities are in support of, and have deemed important and useful, ensuring that projects we are working on are not exploitive in any way. We believe it is very important to educate yourself about current social and environmental issues facing the place you visit, in order to be a conscious and informed traveler.
We are committed to only supporting local communities by working with local scientists, instructors, and organizations leading conservation initiatives that are backed by the local community. We intentionally work to avoid diverting any funds away from local people and businesses. During our travels we support local transportation companies, utilize public transport, and walk when possible to limit emitting greenhouse gasses. Additionally, we are committed to limiting group sizes, so there is a low student to instructor ratio which aids in making as little of an environmental impact as possible and allows for more individualized attention given to each participant.
At NOA we incorporate our core values into everything we do. We emphasize compassion and the interconnectedness of all living things in our programs to help empower participants to understand their role in protecting the natural world. We do both marine and terrestrial conservation work, and teach environmental & social responsibility throughout the entire experience. Through experiential project based learning, and our unique STEM curriculum we stimulate participants' love of learning, and provide them with the opportunity to get their hands dirty and make an impact out in the field. We also integrate multicultural learning through cultural immersion, promoting global citizenship and developing an appreciation for difference. Lastly, we value sustainability and permaculture, by always thinking about the impact we are making, and seeking out opportunities to make a positive difference in the communities we visit.
Next time you decide to plan a trip, ask yourself the following questions:
-
How can I give back to the community I’m visiting?
-
What types of souvenirs are environmentally responsible and ethically as well as locally sourced?
-
How can I support local businesses, artisans, and markets in a way that benefits the local community?
-
What are the customs, traditions, and cultural practices of the country I'm visiting? How can I show respect for them?
-
How can I minimize my carbon footprint while traveling? Can I use public transportation or other eco-friendly options?
